Why Mobile Learning? 

Have you noticed that cell phones have not been much about phone calls lately?  This section will help you investigate the ways in which CUNY Colleges are exploring the use of mobile devices in education. So-called ‘smart’ phones are a ubiquitous way to access information from anywhere and they enable our learning community to participate in activities on the go and communicate via text, chat or Skype/video conference from remote locations.

Learn from faculty, students, and instructional technologists about mobile learning projects already taking place to brainstorm project ideas that might fit with your institution’s curriculum, culture, and resources.

The information contained here will ground you in this exciting new area of educational technology and provide you with an overview of mobile learning.

LACUNY Emerging Technologies Committee (Cross posted with Open Source @CUNY)
The Emerging Technologies Committee provides information on upcoming technologies that, while not mainstream yet, could present a future avenue for higher education and librarianship. Open to all, this committee supports the mission with face-to-face meetings and presentations, as well as virtual interactions. Lehman College has gone all-in with mobile technologies, offering a college/library app,  course on mobile literacy, supporting students, staff and faculty with mobile accessible databases and a mobile accessible virtual library tour:

  • Make your virtual first stop the Lehman Leif Library via its mobile tour. Students use their mobile phones together with QR software to learn their way around the library. Even if they don’t have a mobile device, students are able to borrow an iPod Touch or iPad and headphones from the Reserve Desk . To alleviate access issues for those without advanced cell phone capabilities,  the tour can also be taken from any location, and with any internet-connected computer.
  • All library databases are optimized for mobile devices and Lehman college students faculty and staff are able to access them from off-campus, by their LDAP username and password The apps (applications) need to be downloaded to the mobile device

  • Hunter Mobile phone effective practices share April 2010 Mobile devices, such as cell phones, smartphones, and the iPod touch are ubiquitous among students and are increasingly being used to support teaching and learning.  In this presentation, three faculty members discussed how they and their students use these devices.
